Indigenous Nouveau’s Beading Thread Conditioner
I am so excited to be able to finally present one of the best products I have ever created! This thread conditioner has been in the research and development process for over a year before presenting its perfected version to you.
There is nothing more frustrating than working on a project only to have to change your thread constantly because of fraying, snapping and damage to the piece you are working on. Formulated from years of creating thread conditioner for myself, my newest product not only improves your workflow and extends the life of your thread, but will help to extend the lifetime of the pieces you create. It helps to lock your stitches and keep your beadwork tight as well as helping to secure your knots for more stable finishing, especially with crafting involving high tension such as tufting and quillwork.
This is the last thread conditioner that you will ever have to buy. It will last you for years, because you only need the smallest amount on your thread when you use it.
When supply chains were altered by the Covid pandemic, in the arts industry we found the quality of certain of our supplies was suffering. The quality of beading thread in particular was a constant issue, often being replaced by inferior and substandard products instead of the strong, well-wound threads that we had been used to. I developed this product to enable myself to use the products available to me without compromising my work and my workflow.
The Product:
Each tube contains roughly 1.3 fl oz and outside measurements are 70×40mm. This product is not only for beadwork but for use with sinew, tufting, quillwork and sewing.
Using only the finest Vancouver Island beeswax, ethically-produced organic cocoa butter and natural pine resin, this beading thread conditioner is slightly stickier than a traditional glide, as it uses natural and non commercially-processed beeswax which seals and protects the materials you are using. It has less of an oil base, which overtime can actually degrade thread and fabric as because it becomes acidic with age.
It comes in two different oil profiles that I have developed to express my love for the different heritages that I belong to and compliment those culturally specific projects.
Smudge Blend uses extremely high-quality organic essential oils from rural sources and Indigenous harvesters, exercising the highest levels of protocol, respect and commitment to the environment. This blend features Cedar, Sage, and Sweetgrass oils affirms our connection to tradition while imbibing our work with these medicinal plants. It’s like smudging every piece of beadwork or craft you make while you are making it.
Due to the rarity and the expense of these oils, Smudge Blend will be made in smaller, more limited-edition batches.
Solstice Blend reflects the love that I have for my Northern European and Scandinavian heritage, and this scent profile reminds me of cosy winter fireside crafting with a cup of tea. While all of the people that I come from celebrate the equinoxes and the solstices, this blend of oils represents my memories of Scandinavian Yule with the exotic spices brought to Northern Europe by traders and Norsemen along the river trade routes from the East and Mediterranean. All-Organic Cinnamon, ginger, sweet, orange, clove, and vanilla essential oils make you want to put on a cosy pair of socks, crafting deep into the evenings.
THE TUBES!
Besides the formulas themselves, one of the things that I love about this product the most is this custom push-up tube developed by me and the factory that I work with to make this is easiest-to-use thread conditioner. No more random block of beeswax getting stuck to your table or melting in the heat. No more sticky fingers.
These tubes have been developed over many generations of prototypes for the right thickness of eco-friendly recycled paper, dimensions of the tube and volume of the product inside. The finish of the print allows the beautifully printed inner casing to slide easily and the hardened, double push-up disc on the bottom allows you to firmly press the product up and down for use and storage. This contained tube helps protect your work surface from the oils and beeswax and avoiding making your fingers sticky which we all know creates a challenge for our beadwork.
These specially crafted tubes are an important part of this entire product.
(Note on the beeswax: The beeswax in this product is as absolutely organic as it can be, produced in a rural area of Vancouver Island, more than 7 km away from any industrial farming or sprayed roads, which is farther than a honeybee’s forging range. It has tested for pesticides and residues of synthetic agricultural chemicals, although no beeswax can legally be certified as organic due to the nature of bees.)
